Our Team

Michael Yu

Counselor, MS, LMHC, CMHS, EMMHS

With over fifteen years of experience working with individuals, couples and families I have successfully helped many clients with complex issues that negatively impact their lives and their families in significant ways. This is why I believe in treating clients holistically (mind, body and spirit). I also believe the work clients do outside of therapy is as important as the work they do in session, so helping clients develop skills and providing resources that will support and help them make lasting change is a priority.

I have unique experience working with clients on a variety of difficult issues such as sexual abuse, traumatic experiences, and complex family dynamics. I also work with parents and families who are experiencing a great deal of frustration, helplessness and hopelessness. I know what they need and can help them.

Being bilingual and bicultural, I am able to provide therapy that is culturally sensitive and competent, as well as work specifically with individuals, couples and families where there may be language barriers between spouses and/or parents and their children, where one person speak primarily Chinese while the other speak primarily English.

I strive to provide a safe space that is respectful, authentic, accepting, and compassionate for clients to express and process emotions and thoughts. Building a safe and strong therapeutic relationship is what I value most. We will work jointly to develop goals and treatment plans that are right for you. I primarily operate from strengths-based and cognitive behavioural approaches because I believe in helping clients to access their inner strengths and resources, as well as learning effective skills, in order to heal and grow.

I have a passion for working with adolescents and adults who struggle with mental health issues, and I have experiences of successfully helping many culturally diverse clients on issues such as anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, disordered eating, identity, relationship problems, acculturation, and diversity.

As a bilingual counselor who comes from a bicultural background, I can provide culturally sensitive (competent) therapy for clients. More specifically, my unique background enables me to work with clients by attending to relevant cultural factors and influences.
